What to bring?

The key word in dressing for Icelandic conditions is LAYERS! If you are visiting in winter, or expect to be spending a lot of time outdoors even in the summer months, then this is the list for you. -Merino wool, or just regular wool socks & first layer (long johns and long sleeved top) -Non-cotton trousers - jeans are a big nono if there's any precipitation in the forecast, fine of course for evenings indoors :) -A pair of light hiking trousers over long johns are great for outdoors activities, they dry quickly and keep the wind off. A pair of waterproof trousers wouldn't go astray also. -Sturdy shoes (Ankle boots for hiking, with a rubber bottom to keep as waterproof as possible) You will be fine in any sturdy shoes, just best to have a bit of a grip in the sole of the shoe. --Gaiters can be worn over any shoes to add extra protection against water/snow/sand getting in your shoes. -Fleece jumper, any old fleece will do! -A jacket - preferably with a water resistant shell -Ice spikes for winter visitors. Handy if paths are really icy and slippery! -The usual - hat, gloves, scarf, buff/neck gaiter (these are all available in gas stations around the country if you forget yours or if it blows away in the Icelandic wind) -CAMERA - you will need a camera, even if it's just your phone camera! Remember to bring a charger! -We have a northern European electrical socket - 2 prongs SEE HERE All outlets in Iceland provide a standard voltage of 230V with a frequency of 50Hz. (guests visiting from the United States will need a voltage converter for larger electrical items such as hair dryers and straighteners) -Swimsuits - there will be thermal baths!

What should I expect for the weather?

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland isn’t as cold as it sounds. Temperatures are moderate year-round. Snow is not the norm and only settles intermittently in Reykjavík but tends to stay longer in the north. Bring a bathing suit if you plan to visit the lagoon. A favorite pastime is year-round outdoor swimming in countless geothermally heated pools and lagoons, with a typical temperature of 25-28°C. Here and here you can find out the average weather when you’re visiting.

Who can I contact if I need help with my booking or have trouble while in Iceland?

Other Travel Related Information

✦Luggage Storage in Reykjavik:

If you arrive to Reykjavik early (before the official check in time) and have booked a hotel for the night you can always bring your luggage to the hotel and they will store it for you until it's time to check in. For those not staying in the city that first evening but may still want to explore the city without their luggage in tow there are a few options for storage. Click the link to be taken to a google map of Luggage Storage Locations in Reykjavik.

✦Safe Travel & How to Drive in Iceland:

For all its beauty, our country is not entirely harmless. If you plan on exploring Icelandic nature, be on the safe side and have a look at safetravel.is and learn more about How to drive in Iceland. Here are more general information about transport in Iceland. It might be good to learn how to drive with Elfis :)

During the summer, please be careful driving in the countryside as the sheep's walk freely in Iceland between May and early September each year.

Driving off-road in Iceland is illegal and there is a big fine for that sort of activity and causes a big scar on the environment. So please respect nature, drive on marked roads and save some money.

✦Road Conditions:

The Icelandic Road Administration (ICERA) presents a subset of the Icelandic web pages, in English. The information presented is primarily about road condition, weather and such basic information that can assist the foreign traveller in Iceland. Road condition information is entered in the morning and updated as needed during the day. Weather information is in most cases updated 1-2 times every hour around the clock: Road conditions and weather and Traffic Info

✦Mobile / Cell phone:

See information on mobile phone coverage with Síminn in Iceland. You can buy sim card on the Icelandic airplanes, at the airport, downtown in 10/11 supermarket. You can also head to Kringlan shopping mall and there you will have more options.

✦Exchanging Money:

All banks exchange currency. Online currency converter.

The banks in Reykjavík are usually closed during weekend. You can also change money at the Tourist information in Aðalstræti 2, in the city center, as well as in some hotels. It’s highly doubtful you’ll be anywhere that doesn’t accept international credit cards. Visa and Mastercard are pretty much accepted everywhere, and most vendors accept Amex. If you want to stay on the safe side and bring some cash then I suggest Icelandic Krona. You won’t be able to get those outside Iceland so I suggest you visit a bank at the airport after you land in Iceland.

✦Tax Refund:

You can get your tax-free back at Keflavík airport, which is open during departing flights, from 5:30 every morning. If you have tax-refund for an item for less than 5.000 ISK you do not have to show the item, only the receipt. If the tax-refund is more than 5.000 ISK per item, you can not check in that item and need to show it in the tax-refund office after check in.
